Update for Feb 1st

 Hi Families,

We hope you are well and enjoyed our weekend of beautiful sunshine! Can you believe it is February already?! This week is the beginning of Carnaval! Carnaval is a big festival in Quebec that celebrates winter. Students can wear all their Canadian gear this week and next week (Plaids, jeans, toques or any Canadian gear). We will have a virtual concert from Folk De Folle this week live from Quebec, and will be making Bonhomme effigies to go on our jackets. On this Friday and next Monday & Tuesday we will be sliding and playing in the snow. Snow Pants and winter gear is highly recommended for these days. Students are asked to bring a bag of ice cubes for this Friday to create some snow art. If you would like to make maple syrup sticky toffee at home I have attached the recipe below.

We will also continue to work on our curricular topics as well. In Social Studies, we are going to continue to learn about Peru. We will learn about the Llama this week which is Peru's national animal. In Math, we are continuing to build our understanding of Multiplication. We will be sending home what we are doing time to time so that you can see where we are in our journey to learn all about multiplication. In Science, we have learned all about animals. We now know about animal habitats, lifecycles, diet, adaptations,  and have learned about what endangered means. This week we will begin our independent animal research project and hope to share it for our Celebration of Learning on February 24th. In Language Arts, we have been building our descriptive writing techniques. We have learned how to "show not tell" ,where they describe what is happening in their story rather than just saying it. We have also learned about using strong quotes and strong verbs. For Valentines day we are going to write Valentines to Front Line Workers at the hospital this year. We will also make something for our families. Just a reminder there is no Valentines exchange this year.

“Maple Syrup Taffy”, please see the following:

  • Ingredients: 2 cups real maple syrup1 gallon clean fresh snow15 wooden pop sticks.
  • Instructions: Step 1: Pack a large bowl or baking dish full of clean, fresh snow. Smooth the top of the snow flat, and place it in the freezer to stay cold while you cook the taffy. Step 2: Pour the maple syrup into a large saucepan, bring it to a boil, and cook over medium-low heat, stirring with a wooden spoon, until a candy thermometer reads between 235 and 245 F (112 to 118 C), or a small amount of syrup dropped into cold water forms a firm ball. Step 3: Pour about 2 tablespoons of syrup per piece over the snow in thin lines about 5 inches long. Let the syrup strips cool and become firm for 3 to 5 seconds. Pull the candy strips out of the snow, and then wind into a lollipop around the end of a wooden pop stick. Eat while still a little warm.
